An 11-year-old Garden City boy remained in critical condition Monday after being injured
in a fire that destroyed his home a day earlier.
William Pigg is undergoing skin grafts at the Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Augusta and may lose his feet, said Gene Morgan, a cousin of the boy's father.
William's mother, Judy, suffered minor burns to her hands and
arms in the fire that began about 5 p.m. Sunday.
She was treated at Memorial University Medical Center and released,
hospital officials said.
The two were in the living room of the camper, located in the
A-1 Building Mobile Home Park in the 5100 block of Ogeechee Road, when the fire broke out in the kitchen, Morgan said.
Several other residents of the mobile home park fought the
fire with extinguishers and hoses, he said.
Morgan and his fianceé, Tina Santacrose, whose neighboring home was destroyed in the blaze, had a dog
and a cat killed in the fire.
"Everything I own was in there," Morgan, 43, said, standing next to the charred remnants of his home.
"It just tears me up. The things you love the most seem to be the things that get hurt the worst."
Once Pigg and her son were safely out, Morgan went into the smoke-filled camper to look for his pets.
"My animals are like my kids," he said, adding that one cat
did survive.
An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing, said
Assistant Chief Hugh Futrell of Southside Fire/EMS.
Garden City Police said William Pigg, a sixth-grader at West Chatham Middle School, also sustained extensive burns to his chest and neck. The school
is collecting get-well cards from classmates and will provide the boy with clothes, said guidance counselor Ali Ross.
"The family is in our thoughts and prayers," she said. "We're
going to do everything we can to support them in this time."
